Dobrich intimidation makes the New York Times
“If you want people to stop calling him ‘Jew boy,’ you tell him to give his heart to Jesus.”
Does that sound like the voice of a patriotic Christian America to you?
Does it sound like the Delaware you remember from even ten years ago?
I don't think it is the true voice of the people of Sussex County and yet people like the person who said those words to Mona Dobrich have been enboldened by George Bush and the moderate Republicans who have allowed thier party become the party of hate and anti-American sectarianism.
Read the whole NYT articleand ask yourself if the leader of Delaware's Republicans, Michael Castle should shoulder some of the responsibilityt for allowing this cancer to grow in his party and our state.
GEORGETOWN, Del. — After her family moved to this small town 30 years ago, Mona Dobrich grew up as the only Jew in school. Mrs. Dobrich, 39, married a local man, bought the house behind her parents’ home and brought up her two children as Jews.
For years, she and her daughter, Samantha, listened to Christian prayers at public school potlucks, award dinners and parent-teacher group meetings, she said. But at Samantha’s high school graduation in June 2004, a minister’s prayer proclaiming Jesus as the only way to the truth nudged Mrs. Dobrich to act.
“It was as if no matter how much hard work, no matter how good a person you are, the only way you’ll ever be anything is through Jesus Christ,” Mrs. Dobrich said. “He said those words, and I saw Sam’s head snap and her start looking around, like, ‘Where’s my mom? Where’s my mom?’ And all I wanted to do was run up and take her in my arms.”
After the graduation, Mrs. Dobrich asked the Indian River district school board to consider prayers that were more generic and, she said, less exclusionary. As news of her request spread, many local Christians saw it as an effort to limit their free exercise of religion, residents said. Anger spilled on to talk radio, in letters to the editor and at school board meetings attended by hundreds of people carrying signs praising Jesus.

Hardly. Did Castle cause Katrina? No.
But, If I had written, "Castle stood by and did nothing - showed no leadership in his party - when Bush sent crony idiots to run FEMA and that contributed to Katrina being a worse disaster than it should have been." I'd be right.
Similarly, Castle has stood by and has shown no leadership while religious nuts drove these people out of SC because thay are jewish.

I find it oddly ironic that you are posting an article about this here. Our firm was handling part of the lawsuit that is ongoing as a response to the actions of the school district. But that's all I can say about that without getting myself in trouble...
BTW -
I just read Hube on this, and some of you may not know that five Republican state legislators came out to support making Christianity the offical religion of the IRSD.
In short, the state GOP has made a faustian bargian with these anti-American religious zelots.
That is where Castle's total lack of leadership came in.
Now, he might also support making Christianity the official religion of the IRSD. I don't know, but I'll ask the next time I call his office. (Heads up Jenna!)

I remember Bob Dole's speech accepting the nomination in 1996. He was trying to distance himself from the Atwater/Willie Horton style of campaigning, and he said something like this (I'm paraphrasing, couldn't find the exact quote):
"We are the party of Lincoln, and if anybody is supporting me out of hate for others, I don't want your vote. The exits are clearly marked - get out now."
Castle needs to go to Indian River and tell the anti-Semites he doesn't want their votes.

To be sure, the joint statement that the Christian Reps gave left them with some wiggle room:
We believe that one of the keys to our greatness as a nation has been our acknowledgment of God's grace, our faith in Him and the willing and active participation of our people to worship God as they see fit. Since our country's founding, we have been "one nation under God." That link is as undeniable as the money we carry in our pockets inscribed with the phrase "in God We Trust."
However, when you take into account the level of Christain prostelitizing going on in the district - it is clear that they are not interested in making IRSD safe for the worship of Shiva.

Can't we simply not utter the two "offending" words..there is no legal directive that says you have to say "under god", that was how I handled it as a teen-aged atheism: I just did not say them.
A few years ago, Brian Lamb of C-Span got Ann Coulter to admit that she was a teen-aged atheist...now she uses her limited powers of observation to talk about the godless left...what a total ass.
Don't get me started on where, when and who gets ownership of god here.
The same tenets of "god" certainly, conceptually, are rooted in all three of the great religions and they unite christians, jews and muslims.
Why is the focus otherwise?
Fundamentalism ism ism?

Why stop with Mike Castle, he isn't the only Delaware Republican Party elected official who have taken shots at the Dobrich Family.
Representatives (Sussex County), John Adkins, Gerald Hocker, Ben Ewing, and Joe Booth addresses the Indian River School Board in support of the fundamentalist Christian school board. Booth was over heard saying that "his constituents are Christian, at least the only people he cares about and represnts."
However, this is not a Pary Line distinction, Democrat State Senator Robert Venables from Sussex County also signed that infamous letter.
The only other elected official that has supported the Dobrich Family is coastal Sussex County Senator George Bunting, well not openly, but behind close doors. In Sussex County that's the best anyone can expect.
