Cheney’s response a concern to GOP

Vice president urged to make public statement on shooting

Vice President Cheney's slow and unapologetic public response to the accidental shooting of a 78-year-old Texas lawyer is turning the quail-hunting mishap into a political liability for the Bush administration and is prompting senior White House officials to press Cheney to publicly address the issue as early as today, several prominent Republicans said yesterday.

The Republicans said Cheney should have immediately disclosed the shooting Saturday...

Q. What is odd about this MSNBC story?

NOTE OF CLARIFICATION: For the record, I hope the guy does not die. However, I also I hope that this press coverage does not discourage loathsome old Republicans from shooting other loathsome old Republicans in the face. When it comes to Republicans randomly shooting shot guns off in the vicinity of other Republicans, I am for it.

Comments:
Here's one odd thing in the article, on page 2:

One person close to both men said that Bush is the only person in the White House who could persuade Cheney to change strategy...

How many people in the White House are "close to both men?" I'm guessing this article is a Rove leak.

There was already plenty of credible talk about Cheney's exit, but now that he's shot a guy, the plans must be accelerated and the Republican PR machine is totally off-balance. Sounds like a busted flush!

Now that you mention it, what an odd sentence. Why would the President have to "persuade Cheney to change strategy". He IS the President right?

The other weird thing is that all the Republicans quoted are "former" officeholders; sounds like the establishment is still terrified of Cheney. The whole thing sounds like Rove is struggling to get control of the spin on this thing and is trying to accelerate the Cheney exit so he can drop the other shoe (anoint the new VP). A very delicate operation, since Cheney knows where all the bodies are buried.

Someone is cooking something up. I mean, what ever happened to the rock solid republican message discipline?

The fact that the story was written is remarkable, the additional fact that they got republicans to comment unfavorably on the administration is unbelievable.

Yes, this article is definitely the beginning of the end. Nice catch.
