Constitution, Schmonstitution

In the wake of the exposure of the criminal activity of the Bush administration, some right-wing nut jobs have chosen this talking point to hold onto like some kind of deck chair bobbing in the flotsam of a sunken ship.

"What we do know is that we have not suffered another attack on the Homeland since 9/11. That is a miraculous fact. And President Bush should be applauded for protecting the country rather than excoriated, to say nothing of impeachment which is on the lips of some Democrats."

This is idiotic on two levels:

1) This is who they were spying on: "Pentagon officials have been spying on what they call "suspicious" meetings by civilian groups, including student groups opposed to the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual military personnel." Special note for the clueless: This is an example of Bush's upsidedown priorities.

2) We all know that if the Bush Administration had "foiled" any terror plot they would have blown every covert op protocol to announce it on Fox News. They would have. We know this because they have blown the cover of field agents for less political mileage.

Yesterday I was against impeachment, despite what you may have imagined. Today, I'm not so sure.

3) If they had a PDB that said, "Osama Determined To Strike Within The US" and knew that some of the hijackers were in San Diego prior to the 9/11 attacks, but could not prevent an act of terror, what makes anyone think they could have used illegal wire taps to prevent an act of terror.
First of all, prove to me that they used non-warranted wiretaps on any of the groups you mentioned. Wait. Don't bother. They didn't.

Second, you know they wouldn't announce if the wiretaps had foiled a terrorist plot, because it would let our enemies know how we found out.

Third, part of the reason 9/11 wasn't caught ahead of time was that Colleen Rowley took too long to fill out the FISA paperwork to get a warrant for Moussoui's car. And that was because of the volume of the paperwork, not Rowley.

I'm done with you until you show any sign of reason.
"Second, you know they wouldn't announce if the wiretaps had foiled a terrorist plot, because it would let our enemies know how we found out."

Exactly. They would have let us know AND our enemies know because everything is put to the service of politics with these guys. EVERYTHING. They gave up intel sources in Pakistan that took years to cultivate for the sake of a few headlines prior to the election and you know it.

The gays were being watched by the Pentagon. It is an example of how this administration sets priorities. Not an example of illegal wiretaps.

And I’m done with you and your BS cut and paste jobs.
So, I'm right then. Thanks.

If it makes you happy to think that - then go right ahead.

I hope it makes you happy enough to forget that Bush gave up intel sources in Pakistan (for minor political gain) that took years to cultivate.

I don't know goper. This is kind of sad for me. In the brief time we've been trading jabs, I got the impression that you were the kind of principled republican that put the coutry ahead of the republican party.
