Carper to Choose Sides

Tom Carper faces a key vote today as Senate Republicans seek votes to foil filibuster on the Patriot Act.

Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senate Republican leaders are struggling to fend off a filibuster of legislation renewing the USA Patriot Act that would expand the Federal Bureau of Investigation's power to fight terrorism.

A bipartisan group of opponents of the measure said key provisions would sacrifice civil liberties by granting unrestricted power to the FBI to request personal and business records. The Senate today will vote on a so-called cloture motion to end the filibuster, the unlimited debate that can kill legislation and requires 60 votes to overcome.

Delaware Democrats must hold Carper accountable if he continues to act like a "Red State" Democrat. It is that simple.

UPDATE: MyDD reports that the cloture vote on the Patriot Act failed 52-47.  Big win for Feingold.  And America.
VIA Yahoo News: The Patriot Act's critics got a boost from a New York Times report saying Bush authorized the National Security Agency to monitor the international phone calls and international e-mails of hundreds — perhaps thousands — of people inside the United States. Previously, the NSA typically limited its domestic surveillance to foreign embassies and missions and obtained court orders for such investigations.

Comments:
The Senate did foil the Patriot Act 11 but I can only hope that Carper voted it down.
It is a relief for moderates to know that the House now has an anemic majority at best on these gravely partisan bills.
Not so long ago, independents and liberals watched in horror at the lockstep, mindless lemming modality of lawmaking in our capital.
The 1992 GOPers took over the legislative branch ostensively to start a revolution and they have gotten caught in the same old trap of corruption and undue influence that of the former DEMs leadership.
Must be Orwell was right about power and corruption.

Big win for America? You really think so, jason? How so? It's been the effectiveness of the Patriot Act which has thus far prevented another attack on our soil.

See, it's knowing that most liberals think precisely the way you do that makes conservatives like myself ever grateful that the adults are back in charge of our national security. Libs are hopelessly naive about such matters, and simply cannot be trusted to do what is necessary to protect us. You're just not hard-wired that way.

Wow the mantra of weak DEM foreign policy comes back to the surface!!!
Where'd you pull that one from, Trinity?

DEMs have been polled at higher confidence in foreign policy than GOP of late due to the Bush/Rummy/Condi failures. The dismal record and sinking image of USA around the globe doesn't bode well for your party, my friend.
That Cheney works diligently at a torture caveat for the CIA and the break out news of US secreat foreign torture cells is anathema to Americans and foreigners alike.
Now we have the GOPer led senate reject a (non) Patriot Act on top of Bush amitting that he has been allowing secret bugging of Americans without court supervision.....KING GEORGE?????

Before your add more to your smug conclusions of the way Americans perceive DEMs abilities in office, take a breather and open your eyes to 2005 reality... GOPers are sinking fast.

(by the way, is your moniker supposed to be bringing us the mental image of father, son and holy ghost?

Sorry, Jason your site has a delay factor that fools me into thinking it isn't registering and I duplicate the damn thing.

From observing history, nancy. Imo, in recent decades your party has been on the wrong side of many national security issues, and I do not feel confident with an appeasing, "go along to get along" liberal as Commander-in-chief. I just don't.

As far as the polls go, considering that the majority of MSM journalist types are very much left of center and notoriously anti-war, it's shocking to me that the President's poll numbers aren't in the minus column at this point. lol Not that they will ever stop trying to get them there.

No, nancy. Sorry. Nothing so sinister as that. I'm just a big "Matrix" fan. :)

Trinity -

Don't take this as a personal attack, but you live in a dream world. The notion that the MSM is liberal is simply laughable, and if George Bush is your idea of a rational "adult" then you have no idea of what adulthood is all about.

Dear little Jason. You're so cute! lol I suspect that I'm a lot older than you are. At least, you certainly come off as very young. You've also partaken of the Mother Jones koolaid, I think, but that's all right. As you get older, you may possibly outgrow the worst of your liberalism. :)

And please, let me set your mind at ease. I do not take what you said as a personal attack. In fact, your words literally made me laugh out loud!

Jason, I wouldn't know where to begin to convince someone like yourself that the liberal bias in the MSM is very real. Nothing would work on such willful ignorance anyhow, because you are so deeply immersed in it. So I'll simply say that we will have to agree to disagree on that issue. And we can do that quite agreeably, if you like! :) Your call.

LOL... I'm not jason but I'll take this one. First of all, I'm middle-aged, so I suppose according to your algorithm, I'm a centrist. Pretty good call!

As far as outgrowing liberalism, well, I can't afford to be a Republican yet, so I'm still a Democrat.

I don't think father, son and holy ghost is sinister!!!!!
Just egotistical.
Glad to know you're not coming from that place!!!.
I know nothing about Matrix, don't do sci-fi.
