Are Republicans Racists?
Was I just waxing poetical when I said that the Republican Party had a "racists wing"? I was. It is my blog and I can wax poetical if I so desire. But, does that mean that Republicans are not the party of racism? Let's have a look at the record via Daily kos.
- Nixon’s "Southern Strategy"
- Barry Goldwater's opposition to the Civil Rights Act
- 1960's and 70's migration of Racist Dixiecrats to shelter in the Republican Party
- David Duke's near-win in his 1990 Louisiana campaign for governor
- Infamous race-baiting ad campaigns - Jesse Helms "White Hands" ads and the 1988 "Willie Horton" ads used against Michael Dukakis being the most notorious examples.
- Then Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's racist comment at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party in 2002
- Excessive immigrant-bashing for political gain, such as California's much-ballyhooed Proposition 187
- Continual race-baiting over the Confederate flag, the most recent, successful example being Georgia in 2002
- Republicans running Haley Barbour in the 2003 Mississippi gubernatorial election
Now, set the timer. First mention of Robert Byrd in the comments will be in 10, 9, 8, 7....

2. Barry Goldwater's opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
I'll take this one first, because I can answer it off the top of my head. Goldwater's opposition to the act were based mainly upon the grounds that he favored states rights and also that he felt it intereferred with an individual rights of person's to do business, or not with whomever one chooses. It's generally agreed that he was not a segregationist.
1. Nixon's Southern strategy is considered by many to be a continuation of this policy. I'm not ready to concede it as racism.
p.s. A higher percentage of Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act than did the Democrats, so if you're using being for or against the act as a measure of racism, Democrats lose.

Rich got me in the first comment, then proceeded to his drive rhetorical car over a cliff. It is true that the Civil Rights Act was passed with the help of Republicans.
As for the other stuff, I never said, "Rich is a racists". I said, "Is the Republican party the party of racism?"
The record is clear on that question.

I think the point is that there are clearly racists in both parties, but while Republicans tell minorities that we believe in their ability to make a life and a positive impact on society, the Democrats keep telling them that they need the government to take care of them and pay for their needs.

Hey, Under a DEM president Clinton, the poor (what ever skin color) were given a shove: welfare to work for able recipients.
Now, even with those limits in place on handouts to welfare seeking adults, the GOPers want to reduce the burden on wealthy tax payers by reducing spending for kids lunches and a host of other ad nauseum nasty, heartless cuts in services to the neediest....a few weeks before the holiest day in Christianity.
No wonder the churches are holding prayer vigils in front of the white house in protest...15 of them got hauled off to jail today.
What would Jesus do?
NOT VOTE for the GOP!!!!
