Republicans purging moderates = good news for Democrats (and the country)

"A new poll out from Rhode Island College shows that conservative challenger Steve Laffey is crushing incumbent GOP Senator Lincoln Chaffee by 17 points."

Can I get a HELL YEAH!!!?

Chaffee is a RINO R much hated by the insane "Club for Growth" zealots in the Republican party. In a way, he is getting the boot for the same reasons Lieberman got the boot. Bush and Rove have taken the middle ground out of American politics. Lieberman was too loyal to the failed President - the right wing nut jobs who are purging Chaffee don't think he was loyal enough.

The bottom line:This is great news for Democrats.

"A (Chafee loss) turns Whitehouse into the heavy favorite for November. If Linc goes down all Whitehouse has to do is drift a bit towards the center between the primary and November to ensure those moderates don't give Laffey a second look.

OTOH If Chaffee wins, Whitehouse is in a genuine dogfight to see who can get 51% of the votes. It would siphon off resources that could go to other races that desperately need a boost (like Talent/McCaskill, or Kean/Menendez)" - TPM muckraker

This is hilarious. You're trying to project what you and the nutroots did to 90% Joe Lieberman onto 10% Lincoln Chafee. Not the same. The NRSC is running ads attacking Laffey and has brought in people from all over the Northeast to do a 72-hour plan for Chafee. All this for a guy who did not support Bush's reelection, voted against cloture on Alito and generally votes with the Dems in every case. Contrast this with Lieberman, who was the D VP candidate in 00 and had about a 90% record with D's, but got no support from the DSCC.

No, for that to be true Chaffee would have to vote with conservatives 99% of the time, but cross the aisle on a single GOP hot button issue, like say abortion or gun control. The truth is that Lieberman didn't buy into the one issue that unifies all the single-issue factions of the Democratic party, that George W Bush is pure evil. Chaffee, on the other hand, has annoyed his constituency for misrepresenting them time and time again.

Doh, crossposting leads to redundancy.

Guys -

I'm not talking about the GOP. I'm talking about the voters. They don't like the middle grounders. It is that simple.

I'd expect the NRSC to support Chaffee just like I'm not surprised the DLC is sticking with loserman.

It is a lie that Lieberman was 99% or even a 90% liberal. The voters have spoken on the fact that it was all PR and vote counting. Just as Castle is a good moderate "on paper" when you look at the context of the votes - the fanatsy is punctured.

I'm surpsised the Club for Growth could not find someone to take a bite out of Castle. They have him down as "hostile to taxpayers".

He sure does like the pork.

The NRSC is an official branch of the Republican Party. The DLC is not an official branch of the Democratic Party. It's not the same.

Jason, you are right that Castle is not a moderate. He's a liberal, tried and true.

Castle votes to stay as true to blue as he can - within the paper-puppet rules of the road.

Anyone catch the Vicmead CC - Rakestraw gaff? She scheduled Castle's event and Vicmead shut them out at the last minute, but not before Ken Grant had sent out the invite. Fumbles abound this year for DEs lone Rep. and Jason has his number!!!!

DE GOP State Committee revision:
"LATE BREAKING NEWS"
...this year's Salute at Vicmead will be held at the beautiful Bidermann Golf Club! (Vicmead Clubhouse is undergoing renovations). Priscilla

22nd Annual Salute at Vicmead

Nancy,

This might sound odd to hear from me - but I don't think that it is great for the Del Dems to be agianst such nit wits on the state level.

A little competition would be good for the system.

I don't follow...which races, which nit wits?

The state GOP is a train wreck. This Vicmead thing is just a part of a large breakdown. In a way I'm glad they are weak and hapless - but I'm not sure that leads to the best democracy inn the long run.

Last time I checked, Club For Growth didn't even bother listing Castle as a RINO. The GOP is getting the votes it wants from Castle.

You all are silly. It's supposed to be some kind of breakdown of the state party that Vicmead's clubhouse is under construction?

Any opportunity, like Ken Grant slipping on a banana peel, represents a break down for them. Nothing is too juvenile for argument. Just like trying to claim a certain annual event is a front for a porn strip club and crack house. Turns out that was a vendetta

Robot - I typed as MOT Newbie on that last comment, previewed as MOT Newbie, but it posted as anon. Odd. I know you can't help it, but head's up anyway. We'll see how this post goes. Must be a GOP conspiracy or breakdown.
