Wimington News Journal "sugarcoats" right-wing intimidation tactics

Lazy reporting leaves the timeline cloudy

Today's story by Sean O'Sullivan gets some details right, but neglects to include the culture of Christian sectarianism created by the board and State Reps and the recent pronouncements of success by the Stop the ACLU Coalition - leaving the impression that the right-wing intimidation tactics used to drive the Dobriches out of the IRSD were no big deal.

Several national Web sites this week -- including the popular Daily Kos -- began chattering about school prayer at the Indian River School District, an issue that's been on the U.S. District Court docket in Delaware for more than a year.(snip)

A group calling itself Stop the ACLU Coalition posted a phone number and address for the Dobrich family as part of an "Expose the ACLU plaintiff" project. But the information was incorrect. The American Civil Liberties Union arranged representation for the Dobrich family in the case.

The Dobriches court case (a year old) is linked to the "Expose the ACLU plaintiff" project leaving the impression that the "chattering" websites are bringing up something that is old news. The fact that Nedd Karieva of Stop the ACLU set off the firestorm when he acknowedged to the Jesus General that he was "pleased" to have had a role in instigating the flight of the Jewish family is never mentioned.

O'Sullivan is similarly dismissive of the taunts and death threats directed at the Dobriches, saying only that they "claimed" they were "harassed" because of their religion. Instead he focuses on more timeline confusion in the blogs.

While some blogs generally got the facts right, others botched the details. A Daily Kos posting reported -- and the Web site Jesus' General implied -- that the recent posting prompted the two families to flee their homes.

Not true. The Dobrich family moved out of the district before their lawsuit was filed in February 2005.

This is the type of thing you would expect from a defense attorney trying desperately to create "reasonable doubt" in a jury's mind. Not an objective reporter.

"This is the type of thing you would expect from a defense attorney trying desperately to create "reasonable doubt" in a jury's mind. Not an objective reporter."

Or, it's simply a fact that casts serous doubt on the DL/Kos line of thinking on this. They either moved or they didn't. It's not spin. They moved before the lawsuit.

I'd just be upset that they didn't go local and include DL in the article.

Well that too.

How about the liberals at DSU wanting the AD gone only because he is "white?"

Amy,

You are going to have to provide a link or something. This is the internet - maybe you've heard of it.

In the meantime - I'll put you down as another person in favor of making Christianity the official religion of the IRSD.

The fact that the Dobrich family had to flee is the issue here. Not when they left. Just makes ya proud to be a Delawarean doesn't it?

I'm reminded of Jack Markell's experience as a child when some upstanding citizens burned a cross on his family's lawn because they are Jewish. And that wasn't downstate in the red-zone. That was right here in liberal Newark. To the neighbors credit they were outraged and ralled around the Markells.

Apparently, nobody bothered to rally around the Dobrich family. Sickening.

"Apparently, nobody bothered to rally around the Dobrich family. Sickening."

Before they filed the lawsuit, no one could rally around them because there was no identifiable problem.

"The fact that the Dobrich family had to flee is the issue here. Not when they left. Just makes ya proud to be a Delawarean doesn't it?"

Actually the issue here is Jason trying to make this a political issue instead of a social one.

...the issue here is Jason trying to make this a political issue instead of a social one.

Well now it's a political issue - there is pending legislation in the House that directly affects the rights of people like the Dobriches.

So here's a question for Mike Castle that's not a stretch at all - as our sole House rep he's directly involved and he owes us an answer: What is Castle's position on H.R. 2679? This bill would remove the right of plaintiffs such as the Dobriches from recovering legal fees when they sue to enforce their First Amendment church/state rights - which would essentially strip their right to representation.

This bill is currently in committee (the Constitution Committee - who knew there was such a thing?) and recently had a public hearing.

Oops, that was a committee hearing, not a public hearing as far as I know.

Scary but straight talk from My Left Wing via dKos:

When someone actually gets killed - when some NYTimes reporter or editor, or some blogger... when that first person is bloodied and hung up on a post somewhere, what then? More complaints? More criticism? More talk about the real Democratic party?
...
I've said it a few times here - these people want us DEAD. THEY REPEAT IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Every day they get closer to making it happen.
...
These people intend to do what has often been the American way. They intend to pump up the force of the mob and start killing....

...When they come they will come the same way all the other fascists came, the way the Brotherhoods and Iron Fists of the 20s and 30s came. Little men in large groups. They taunted and jeered and worked themselves up into lathers and ganged up on anyone they didn't like.
...
I'm tired of this thing just brewing and brewing. Read the fascist histories. This fucking thing is no mystery. It is following every fascist script rehearsed over the past 100 years. The government stirs up bigotry and hatred. A punditocracy is established and empowered. Bogeymen are created and their punishment called for. Liberals, newspaper editors, reporters, the non-conformist clergy, let alone dissenters or anyone with any opposing view. Anyone who questions any official line. Anyone who disagrees with war. IT'S ALL HAPPENING HERE.

So here's a question for Mike Castle that's not a stretch at all - as our sole House rep he's directly involved and he owes us an answer: What is Castle's position on H.R. 2679?

This is appropriate to bring Castle into the issue.

Who needs alternate history when we have our very own current events?

Actually Mike Castle seems to have little or no interest or influence over Delaware politics. Castle was unable to secure a victory for SB 81, the DE stem cell bill, which was gutted by Republicans. Apart from a single press release I didn't see any effort by Castle to get the bill passed. OK, maybe he was working quietly behind the scenes - I guess a little TOO quietly.

If Castle had a little fire in the belly, this would now be payback time for those DE Republicans who went against Castle on his flagship issue of stem cells. (hey - maybe THAT explains the Republicans' run of bad luck!)

Yep, string up dKos with piano wire.
